Description Excition is a graduation card business that I started with 2 friends. We originally got into the business because the existing provider of announcements at our university did not offer personalized announcements with all of the University of Washington majors. It seemed silly to us that people weren't able to get the degree they had spent the last 4 years (or more) on printed on the inside of the cards they sent out for graduation and, hey, how hard could it be anyway? The crown jewel of Excition's business is currently our online ordering system. The whole process of personalizing an announcement is carefully designed to be super easy, flexible enough to accommodate everyone's unique acheivements and style, and cool enough to make our competitors look pathetic. As the lone software person at Excition (the other two are Technical Communication and Business), I wrote all of Excition's software from the ground up. Even more impressive than what you do see on excition.com is what you don't see. Almost everything you see on excition.com can be edited or tweaked by an admistrator (and you don't need to be technically inclined to be an administrator) and automated web crawlers keep our information on our various schools up to date. For instance, when a school changes one of its graduation ceremony's dates on their website it changes on excition.com. When a new degree is offered, excition.com offers it. A streamlined internal tool takes orders placed online or in person at our store, prints them using our top-secret technique, creates shipping labels, tracks inventory, and keeps everyone up-to-date by email. All we have to do is put the finished products in a box and throw it in the mail cart. Excition always ships personalized announcements within 24 hours of an order being placed. Our competitors take 2-4 weeks to do what we do in a day. |
